When selecting the right patio doors for your home, you need to make sure they are aesthetically pleasing to the eye, as well as functional, providing security and insulation to your home as well as improving its overall appearance. This will not only be beneficial to the current owner of the home, but in the event that the house is to be sold, the new windows will be an added selling point, enhancing the chances of a quick sale at an excellent price.
Start by considering the doors. Patio doors or folding doors are now often used as access to the garden or a balcony, as well folding sliding doors or folding doors being used in the home to save on limited space while still remaining stylish. Traditional French patio doors are generally constructed from wood or timber, however they are also available in PVC or aluminium options, which can either open inwards or outwards.
Patio doors are commonly made from two or more panes of glass with aluminium or PVC frames, where one or more doors can be slid across to create an opening to walk through. Wide doors can offer excellent views from the house –however, sliding doors can restrict access by at least 50% of its potential opening.
The sliding mechanism for folding sliding doors or folding sliding doors has in the past presented both manufacturers and owners with a number of operational difficulties, but with the advent of the rolling patio door mechanism, this has greatly improved towards the end of the 20th Century. This spelled the end of the cumbersome, difficult to use patio doors of the 1980s and opened up a new range of opportunities in terms of both design and construction.
With the rolling patio door mechanism, a series of rollers (Similar to inline skates in miniature), are fitted to the bottom of the door panels so that the patio doors can open and close with ease. These rollers are usually made from nylon or steel. Steel may cause wear and tear to the runners; however rollers made from nylon are less likely to do this. In either case, the wheels are cheaper and easier to replace than the runners themselves.
Folding sliding doors are becoming increasingly popular. Again, these can be made from a range of materials and offer access either between rooms or between one room and an outdoor area. Where materials are concerned, aluminium is generally better for access than PVC, and has narrower frames, providing reduced interruption to the views –it also has a much smaller profile than wooden frames.
Although the low-budget option is to choose softwood, hardwood will not deteriorate as quickly and will be more durable, offering better insulation in the winter. Wooden frames may need to be treated annually, however, to prevent them from being damaged by the elements.
PVC frames come in a wide variety of finishes –but be wary when purchasing as the quality can vary too. Ensure you are purchasing your folding doors, patio doors or foldingsliding doors from a reputable supplier and you will be able to enjoy their use for years to come.
