First developed by the Nielsen / Aagaard family in Denmark in 1976, trollbeads began as a small silver charm fashioned by amateur silversmith Søren Nielsen. As the charm was given six, troll-like faces which changed in expression as the trollbead was rotated, it became known as “The Mask”, and was the first ever Trollbead charm to be produced.
The beads were originally strung on pieces of leather and were sold in the Copenhagen jewellery store belonging toSøren and his sister Lise’s father, Svend Nielsen. The quirky, unusual beads became such a success with customers that soon requests came flooding in for the beads to be made in various materials, shapes, colours and sizes and in 1987, Lise opened a second store in Lyngby.
During the 1980’s Trollbeads added a locking mechanism to their bracelets which could be taken off and then reattached onto the chain. This meant that the wearer was then able to experiment with a variety of different combinations of beads to suit their personal style and taste. By the end of the 1990’s, Lise began to export and distribute Trollbeads outside of Denmark (Her parent company, Lise Aagaard Copenhagen, deals with the export, distribution and creative design aspects of Troll beads.) In 2000, there began to be competitors on the market for the original Trollbead (Although there are many alternatives available, it is widely recommended that genuine beads be purchased which will be able to fit the bracelet correctly and which will be made out from quality materials.) The following year, Lise introduced glass beads to the collection. Today Trollbead materials include pearls, gold, semi-precious and precious stone, silver and glass beads, which are made by turning molten glass in a flame heated to 800°C by highly skilled bead makers.
Trollbeads are comprised of several components: a bracelet, which can be made in either silver, leather, or gold, a detachable lock so that the wearer can swap beads, stoppers or spacers which can be used either to prevent the beads from falling off, or to add between beads in a pattern, an optional safety chain, and of course the beads themselves.
Today Trollbeads have become more popular than ever before, owing to their ability to allow the wearer to interchange the beads whenever they want and the variety of different troll beads on offer. Troll beads come with a variety of themes. Some beads symbolize mythology, some refer to science and some can be used to represent a hobby the wearer has, such as playing a musical instrument. But one of the most interesting factors attracting customer to Trollbead bracelets is the way in which certain beads can be chosen to mark special occasions, such as the arrival of a new addition to the family, a birthday or an anniversary, as a reminder of a personal achievements or milestones reached in life, and to remind the wearer of happy memories. Not unlike traditional charm bracelets, Troll beadshave a special significance to the wearer which they will treasure for years to come.
